Every year over 15,000 families will hear the words "your child has cancer". Every day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer. The average age of children diagnosed is 6 years old.
The Iron Pigs Orlando are again riding to raise funds for children undergoing cancer treatment at Nemours Children's Hospital. With your support, the Iron Pigs have raised over $320,000 to benefit these children and their families.
In 2022 we passed the $300,000 milestone!
About the Iron Pigs Orlando - SJR, Inc.
St. John's River Chapter is a non-profit chapter of the Iron Pigs Motorcycle Club comprised mainly of Law Enforcement Professionals, Firefighters and local business owners. Recently, as our efforts have grown beyond our expectations, we have organized the 501(c)3 non-profit corporation Iron Pigs Orlando- SJR, Inc. with the sole purpose of fundraising to directly benefit the children patients and families at Nemours Children's Hospital.
How we got our start with cancer fundraising...
In 2012, a member of the St John's River Chapter received news that his sister had been diagnosed with brain cancer, this news was overwhelming for the family. Within three short months the St John's River Chapter pulled together a Poker Run called "Kelly's Wish". The event drew about 150 motorcycles and raised $3,000 to help the family with some medical expenses. Afterwards our member asked his sister if there was anything else he could do to help ease her burden, her response was simple and heartfelt, "keep doing what you're doing to help as many as you can, keep moving it forward".
That following year, with Kelly's memory at the forefront, the Chapter changed the event name to the Pigs Against Pediatric Cancer Ride. With your support, as well as local businesses, the Iron Pigs Orlando - SJR has raised over $167,000 for Nemours Children's Hospital since 2014. These funds have supported:
- an arts program for cancer patients, including the teacher and supplies
- custom coloring books and art events to highlight the children's work
- virtual reality and robotics equipment for PedsAcademy, the hospital education program in conjunction with UCF
There is still much to do and we are committed to working for the children and families with your help as long as we are able!
